I felt it this morning as soon as I stepped out the door on my way to work.  I’m willing to bet the fish felt it too.

Sub 50ºF air temps.

After your ancestors relied upon it for thousands of years, that primal gene in your DNA is still pulsing.  It’s telling you that big, horny, fish are on their way up the river.  It’s telling you that the Browns and Brookies you’ve been catching all year are about to put their birthday suits on.   The leaves rustle, and as the cool breeze flows around the back of your neck, you know that the Bass and Panfish in the local pond are on the verge of bulking up for the winter.  The air and water temps are dropping.  The fish can feel it, and so can you.

You’re a predator.

Yeah, you don’t mind gathering berries and the like, but it’s protein that’s gonna get you through another long, cold Winter.  The trips you made over the Summer were fun, but like a fox pup slaughtering grasshoppers in an open hay field, they were just practice for the big game.
It’s time to dust off your 8wt, and get your fly boxes filled- time to sharpen those arrows, and clean that 12 gauge.  Cause the Fall is coming, and it’s survival of the fittest.
